when i look at life in general, which encompasses technology, since it’s one of my passions, i often wonder where the idea of good old simplicity went.
it seems like over time, people have decided that what we have isn’t good enough, so there has to be a steady flow of enhancements coming our way. more of this, more of that, fancier this, fancier that. if something isn’t sparkly, it’s not worth anything.
it used to be that the idea of keeping things simple was pretty easy to get a grasp on, but the notion of simplicity has changed as well. a “simple” hotel room includes tv with cable, internet and a mini-fridge. when did that become basic?
when we forget the idea of simplicity we no longer appreciate anything at face value anymore. it’s almost as if simplicity has become so foreign to us because of technology and the like, we can no longer wrap our brains around it.
simplicity is a hug after a bad day, it’s a phone call when you miss someone, it’s a smile towards someone who is frowning. those things are simple. but what do we do when someone is having a bad day? we take them out for a fancy dinner, or when we miss someone we plan a trip to go see them and plan cool things to do when we get there. we jump to a grand solution without thinking of the simple stopgap to make life better in the meantime.
it sucks and i’m as guilty of it as everyone else.
forget the frills, i want to get back to simple.
